How and Why to Ironing Linens
What could seem to be the most difficult task or waste of time will become an appreciation from your house guest.
My grandmother was a meticulous Puertorican woman who dedicated her entire life to maintaining a perfect-looking house. From the bedsheet selection to the dinnerware she used daily you could see her personality shine through. She taught me how to fold a fitted sheet perfectly, and how to ensure I find the matching pillow cases to my favorite sheet set. Of course, she also taught me how to iron the sheets.
Ironing sheets are part of our routine when doing laundry. We did not only iron the ones we were going to use but also the sets we were going to put away. I always asked myself “Why do we have to iron them if we are not going to use them?”
Fast forward 15 years later and living in another country I found myself ironing my sheets. 5 years into having a house I am still ironing not only the sheets to our bed but also the guest bedrooms. Sadly I do not have the luxury of having an outdoor drying line for the sheets but I still make the best out of it.
Why you should iron your sheets?
It's a time-consuming task that is not meant for everyone. Some people have said that I am crazy, “why do it if the dryer can do it” or “You just don't have anything else to do ''.
Well, let me tell you why I do it and the benefits of ironing sheets -
Same as baking, ironing transports me to a zen place that helps me release all the accumulated stress. It's an immediate satisfaction when you are smoothing a wrinkled sheet. That is if you are doing it the correct way.
We love to host guests in our home and I want to make sure they have a great experience. What better way than to provide a luxurious feel for guests to relax at bedtime? or even better making them feel they are in a 5-star hotel.
Do you still think ironing is unnecessary?
Ironing also kills bacteria that might have held tight to the sheets after laundry. The hot steam on cotton will ensure your sheets are free of germs.
First-time home visitors would love to tour your house. What a great presentation when the bed sheets are ironed and the pillowcases are crisp!

The quickest way - sheets need to be damp - this will remove all wrinkles at once and evaporate the water. You can fold the sheets in half if you prefer. I personally do not like to see the crisp line in the middle of my sheet so I do not fold it. Note: Make sure the iron setting is HIGH. (Cheat by ironing on the bed. Just make sure the sheets are only damp and not wet.)
Fully Dry Sheets - prepare a spray bottle with water - dampen each section as you go. This will help remove all wrinkles. Note: if wrinkles are not coming off quickly, spray more water and make sure all of it evaporates when ironing.
How can I always have iron sheets?
Make sure that all your extra sheets are ironed before putting them away. This will make it easier when it is time to change the sheets.
Do you still think ironing sheets is not worth it?
I am curious to hear your ironing sheet story. Are you thinking about it? Do you think this is a crazy habit? Share your opinion on the comments!
